FEBS Letters Young Group Leader Award

The FEBS Letters Young Group Leader Award is given to an independent scientist, aged 40 years or younger, who is the corresponding author of an outstanding research letter published in the previous calendar year.

2011 FEBS Letters Young Group Leader Award Winner:
Dr. Shiro Suetsugu
University of Tokyo

The award winning manuscript is:

Shimada A, Takano K, Shirouzu M, Hanawa-Suetsugu K, Terada T, Toyooka K, Umehara T, Yamamoto M, Yokoyama S, Suetsugu S (2010) Mapping of the basic amino-acid residues responsible for tubulation and cellular protrusion by the EFC/F-BAR domain of pacsin2/Syndapin II. 2010 584(6):1111-8.

The prize-winning manuscript addresses the molecular requirements for the ability of membrane deforming domains to achieve specific subcellular structures. The committee praised the manuscript for its multidisciplinary approaches bridging structural biology and functional studies while embracing the atomic and cellular level. Dr. Suetsugu and his team provided fundamental new insights into the molecular mechanisms governing the plasticity of biological membranes and specifically into the formation of cellular microspikes and tubules.

The Award Committee were: Giulio Superti-Furga (Vienna) Chair, Pascale Zimmermann (Leuven), Ulrike Kutay (Zurich), Maurice Montal (San Diego) and Angel Nebreda (Barcelona). We would like to thank them for selecting the prize winner.

If you would like to be considered for the FEBS Letters award, submit a research letter to us before your 41st birthday.
